More About Coach Michael

I am an IMPACT certified coach with a local volleyball club - Club Kalani Volleyball - and have over 10 years of volleyball experience, including playing and officiating. I typically coach in the 14-and-under age group. I have also coached middle and high school programs. Now, I work as the Assistant Coach at Mills College, and continue to coach for Club Kalani in the spring. I have also done camps, clinics, and summer programs.

I have had the privilege of being mentored by the director of Club Kalani. He gave me first-hand instruction for 4 years on how to teach the skills of volleyball, and how to run a program. He and I together led the team at Holy Names High School in Oakland, CA to their first league playoffs in a decade. A couple years later, I got the Assistant Coach job at Mills College, and used those skills from my mentor to help the head coach put Mills College back on the map. The team at Mills College only narrowly missed out on making their league playoffs for the first time in OVER a decade by only one spot in their 2018 season. I am privileged to have been a part of that, and to be able to continue to work for the program.

Seeing all of these different "sides of the coin," I am very enthusiastic about private training. Most people seem to be able to make more progress when 1-on-1 lessons are incorporated as part of their training path. I want to provide this training at the ground-level for anyone who is new to the sport, or wants to hone their edge. I have many different pricing options for varied session duration, discounted rates, and numbers of students. Training up to 3 people is not much more difficult for me than training 1, so if you have friends or teammates that want to jump in, that may be a good option. Small-group settings can facilitate bonding and chemistry development between players, and are also much more personalized and intensive than larger group training situations. I believe that 2 hour sessions are better than 1 hour sessions, but I also offer 1 hour sessions for those looking for a shorter duration. Small group or duo training can be very effective for some students, but the benchmark remains the Coach-on-1 set up. Let's talk and develop a training plan that's right for you!

I played on the varsity volleyball team for all four of my years in high school, becoming a 6 rotation player during my sophomore year. During my Senior year, I set a record earning 28 kills in a single match, and received the honor of being selected for First Team All-League. I also played club volleyball during that time at Diablo Valley Volleyball Club. I earned a spot on the men's volleyball team at City College in San Francisco as a walk-on after graduating high school.

All pricing includes gym fees. My basic plan for every session will incorporate some or all of the following elements, typically in roughly the order listed:

4. Serve reception exercises
5. Serving practice
6. Hitting practice
7. Strategy - general, and position specific
