Tons of kids play a lot of basketball, but not many practice with a high level attention to detail on aspects of the game they are not currently good at. When training a player, the only way for him or her to grow is to work on things they do not already excel at. This means not just accepting failure, but encouraging it. When learning a new move, for example, if you are not consistently losing the ball that first day there’s a good chance you’re not going hard enough. You won’t lose the ball in practice but will get it stolen when you are guarded in the game because it is easy to defend. Every slight foot movement, tilt of the head or eyes, and rotation of the hips on a crossover can be the difference between being unguardable and turnover prone. This intense attention to detail is what I learned working with Division I coaches and players, and is what is missing in many young players games. Becoming flawless even with a few moves takes years, but the few details that we will consistently work on will still put you far beyond your competition. Everything I teach will have context and meaning. I will never teach a move without explaining the situation in which you will use that move in the game. My style of teaching the game will be a bit mentally exhausting at first, but will lead to exponentially better results long term!
