More About Coach Matt

Your workouts will be tailored towards your unique ability, guided by realistic, yet challenging goals.

I have coached a wide range of individuals and have the most extensive experience at the high school level, but I welcome all abilities.

Here are some of my highlights from high school coaching:

- Led athletes to 21 overall appearances (including relays) at Indiana Track & Field State Finals
- Nike Outdoor Nationals: 2005, 13th place (7:54.92 - 80th best time in the nation that year) boys 4x800m relay; 2006, 27th place, boys 800m
- Boys’ school-record 4x800m relay lowered from 2003-2005, including 6th Place, Indiana State Finals 2005
- Boys’ school-record 800m lowered from 2004-2006, including 3rd Place, State Finals 2006
- Girls’ school-record 3200m, 2004
- Numerous city, conference, sectional and regional champion runners
- Athletes prepped to run for college programs such as Indiana State, Purdue, and Southern Indiana

I currently run and bike and am continuing to recover successfully from a meniscus tear from several years ago that came about from a slight imbalance and sciatic nerve issue that took 10 years to make that tear occur. More recently, I overcame a bulging disc issue in my back. It is amazing how resilient and yet how vulnerable the runner's body can be. While I was keen in keeping that in check, I am even more focused than before on taking preventative steps to prevent injury for myself or those I am coaching.

I have also managed or worked as salesman in running stores in three different cities. I am very attuned to making sure you come to the table with the right shoes on. One pointer, there is no "perfect" running shoe by model or brand. The only perfect running shoe is the one that works best for you as an individual. The best way to do this is to get custom fit at a running specialty store. If you are reading this far, here is some interesting pre-reading if you are thinking about fixing a running stride: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/10/well/move/running-body-evolution.html?mc=aud_dev&ad-keywords=auddevgate&keplerid=298775838&dclid=CNy2lIWV5vACFdL5wAodyqoLqw#commentsContainer

I ran on scholarship for NCAA Division II University of Southern Indiana from 1997-2001. I specialized in longer distances such as the 5k and 10k on the track, my PRs were set at 15:46 and 32:20. I also finished as high as 17th in the Great Lakes region in cross country. In high school I placed 12th in the 3200m at the Indiana state meet with a 9:45. My 800m PR is 2:04 and 1600m (mile) is 4:34. My half marathon PR is 1:19:53, which I ran several years after college. I also love to run team distance relays, such as the Illinois River-to-River Relay, and I am that guy that will run the meanest leg that no one else wants.

Personal records at a glance:
Track Road Cross Country
800m: 2:04 5k: 15:45 5k: 17:10
1600m: 4:34 4 mile: 21:00 (est.) 8k: 25:50
3000m: 9:14 10 mile: 58:23 10k: 33:17
3200m: 9:45 13.1 mile: 1:19:53
5000m: 15:46
10km: 32:20

Your workouts will be tailored towards your unique ability, guided by realistic, yet challenging goals. I have coached beginners to national-level high school runners. The first session is always more of a "get to know you" session with a light workout at most. I never will throw a high-intensity workout at an athlete until I know what they are capable of handling.

I have only had one session with Coach Matt, but he has already given me the tools to help me get closer to reaching my goal. He's very knowledgeable, a great listener, easy to talk to and takes his role as a coach very seriously. I will definitely be booking another session with him very soon!

My fiancé and I met with Matt a week or so ago, and were really please with the workout. Matt was accommodating to our location, and made arrangements to meet us and find ways to incorporate a running trail that was convenient to us. He provided some great drills for us to try, and gave us some new perspectives on running. Would highly recommend!

Coach Matt provided our daughter a thorough plan to help her take her running to another level. His approach and attitude are both appreciated and I am excited to see the results going forward.

Matt was immediately just as committed to reaching my goals as I was. He really knows his stuff, and with his vast coaching experience has been helping me greatly. Would definitely recommend to anyone with a specific running goal in mind.

Matt was great and hope to book more sessions once we find out more information about our daughter's hip pain. Madeline felt very comfortable talking to him and he was great in explaining things to her.
thanks again
