More About Coach Matthew

Since 2012:
Palo Alto Midnight AAU Program - (2013-2016)
My coaching experience was focused towards Middle and Highschool athletes. I focused on building fundamentals more than team success, as my goals were geared towards player improvement.

- 2006-07 Allen Dunn Trophy award winner in High School (Top Student-Athlete at my school)
- 2007-08 All-Conference Award in MN (Played Varsity Basketball 4 years in high school)
- Recruited to Colorado College for D3 basketball (Played 1 year before dropping to focus on academics)

I played combo guard in high school and college, primarily and jack of all trades type of player. I was considered a shot creator with solid ball handling, good defensive player, as well as a strong shooter. I continue to play in rec league basketball to this day.

Due to preferences with my schedule and location, I will train players at these locations only:

Henry Schmidt Park: 555 Los Padres Blvd, Santa Clara CA
Washington Park: Sunnyvale, CA

My 1 on 1 sessions focus on three aspects of the game:
1. Good shooting form, emulating the top shooters in the sport. By developing strong shooting form, players will see a difference in their ability to make shots from any distance while maintaining good balance.
2. Shooting drills will be the bulk of the sessions once a good form has developed. I will focus on practicing set shots from different spots on the court, shots off the ball, and shots off the dribble. This will not only build endurance while shooting but will also improve shot making ability.
3. Simple ball handling will be developed while participating in these drills.

My group sessions will be focused on fundamental drills for ball handling, passing, and also group games to simulate game atmosphere. We will also work on partner/group shooting drills.

I believe these different drills during sessions are good for any position, as the ability to make shots is one of the most important parts of the game.

Coach Matthew is great. He is patient and knowledgeable. My son wants to schedule the training sessions regularly.

Excellent coach with insight into the game and tailors the training to what you need.

He’s a good coach knows the fundamentals of basketball and will recommend him.

Coach Matthew is a really great at knowing what the players need and and then make a plan out of it. For me , he has drills for moving off the ball for shooting, he analyze the options out of the pick and roll, and he also focuses on my ball handling.I can tell he’s put in the effort and done some research, and the greatest thing about him is that he is always positive. Whenever I am shooting the ball, he gives me words “nice form ! That’s a great shot” In addition to that he also tells me that consistency and effiencfy is what makes great players. I have learned a lot from him even just two sessions, I have always been looking forward to train with him.

Coach Matthew is very good in coaching Basketball skills. I would definitely recommend.

Had our first session with Coach Matthew today. My son seemed very satisfied with the drills & tips he got from Matthew. Said it will help him at his upcoming games this weekend. They got in many reps of shots from different spots. Most importantly, it was very easy to schedule, as Matthew was extremely prompt on responding and worked with our timings & practice locations. He also made sure he chatted with me( the parent) before & after the session to understand our goals. We needed someone who could supplement my son’s team practices rather than conflicting with it. Matthew fit that requirement perfectly. He seems very knowledgeable and I am looking forward to many such sessions.

As one of the former managers of the Palo Alto Midnight AAU basketball club, I’m very familiar with the excellent coaching and interpersonal approach of Matt Vargas who coached with our club from 2013- 2016. Matt was reliable, knowledgeable from a basketball perspective and worked well with players, parents and other coaches. His upbeat approach was popular with our players and we enjoyed having him with our club. Matt would be a coaching asset to any youth basketball coaching situation.
My son who is now 14 year and currently on a Varsity team had the opportunity a few years ago to work with Coach Matt Vargas. The fundamentals for offense, shooting and the keys to defense that Coach Matt taught him still carries true to this day. My son still remembers the key pointers he learned and continues to use that approach both in practice and games. Having the right person provide that confidence at an early age did establish the foundation for the game he loves and carries that forward today with both his skills and enthusiasm.
