More About Coach Matt

I have over 1000 hours as a student athletic trainer at Santa Barbara City College and the University of the Pacific from 2012 to 2017. My experience involves training and coaching junior college and division one athletes through rehabilitation, sport-specific training, and workout protocols. I’ve coached multiple basketball camps at Justin-Siena High School with athletes’ ages ranging from 2nd grade to eighteen years old, and individually trained some of these athletes on the side. The last age group I worked with was junior college and division one athletes with ages ranging from seventeen to twenty-four, but I’m willing to work with any age group. I graduated in the summer of 2017 with Bachelor’s Degree in Health Exercise Sport Sciences and my certifications include; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from National Strength and Conditioning Association, Instrumented-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) from Técnica Gavilán, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers from American Red Cross, and a Blood-borne Pathogen Certification from the University of the Pacific.

I’ve played competitive basketball from the ages five to eighteen in multiple leagues and settings across the Northern Bay Area. However, I did not compete at the collegiate or professional levels. I played basketball for St John’s Catholic in Napa and St. Apollinaris’ Catholic Youth Organization from fourth to eight grade. I also played basketball for Fairfield’s 707’s Finest American Amateur Union from seventh to eighth grade. Throughout my AAU experience, I got to compete in several tournaments against some of the top basketball athletes in the country, while learning and observing from great coaches along the way. I competed in high school for Justin-Siena’s basketball team in Napa California for four years and started on varsity for two of those years. During my senior year I won three All-Tournament Awards and was included as an honorable mention for MCAL’s All League Awards and Napa County League Awards. I also attended multiple basketball camps in California and in the Pacific Northwest throughout my basketball career.

I would communicate with the athlete about their short and long-term goals they want to accomplish, and then I would base the session and remaining sessions off of their goals. I would assess the skills and knowledge of the athlete and then focus on their strengths and weaknesses. Depending on the athlete, I would start with the basic fundamentals of the game (footwork, dribbling, shooting, angles, basic offenses and defenses, etc.) or focus on specific drills to build skills (dribbling drive, creating space, pick and roll offense, moving without the ball, post moves, defensive techniques, strength and conditioning exercises, etc.). I would address any injuries or medical issues before sessions and make sure they’re cleared to exercise, then proceed with a 10-15 minute dynamic warm-up. After the warm-up I would proceed with either working on basic skills or more complicated skill drills. I would also ask how the athletes plays or get opportunities within their team’s offense and defense (if applicable), and focus on drills to maximize the specific skills that coincides with those situations. After the skill work I would do some conditioning and in-game situation work, followed by cool down stretching and exercises.
