More About Coach MaryBeth

I began playing fast-pitch softball Freshman year of high school and was recruited at the collegiate level 2.5 years later. I have coached Middle School girls in Fairview Park & JV/Varsity girls in Garfield Heights. I have experience working with children of all ages, adults with disabilities, and am currently working with social and emotionally disturbed clients in a day treatment center throughout the extended school year. I have numerous years playing all infield positions from a child throughout college. I have umpired fast pitch softball from 10U Summer Leagues through High School.

"Hoagland hit .382 with eight doubles, three home runs, 17 RBIs and 29 runs scored. She had a .987 fielding percentage, which was the second best on the team and sixth best in the conference." I was a Second-Team honoree for the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference in the 2008 season as a catcher for Lake Erie College. I also played 3B for the Storm and earned the lead-off hitter spot with a consistently high OBP. I was MVP of the North Coast League senior year of High School in 2007, earning recognition for only allowing 4 stolen bases that season. I was MVP for the Trinity Trojans for three years and a starting varsity member of the team all four years. Recognized for two years as a middle infielder, I was offered the position to become starting catcher. I played for the Ohio Heat travel team for two summers, focusing on calling pitches and restricting stolen base possibilities. I spent most of my career proud of the defensive abilities I learned and my fielding percentage was astounding. I learned the importance of bunting and slapping to move runners; I created opportunities for the team. I learned to excel in hitting the holes and gaps to increase OBP. I consistently stole bases and was considered a threat for the defense. I ran the bases aggressively, rounding hard, getting a good jumps, and taking advantage of errors; all of which are all teachable skills I pass down to current athletes.

I have taught my players to begin with the basics. "Defense wins games" is not just a saying, it is a way to control practices. Knowing how to hold a softball, how to move the feet, & glove placement is how we get started. Once we know positioning and mechanics, we move to repetitive muscle memory motions. The quickness from mitt to mitt makes the difference in outs- making outs, outs, wins games. It is the little things that make a great player. Drills to learn how to move feet and start the throwing motion will let the fielder make the throw to first and get the out-FASTER. Accuracy is learned after mechanics. Quickness is learned after accuracy. And repeat for each aspect of the game.
Hitting is a very complicated and frustrating skill to learn, and it is consistently a battle against one's self. The right mentality can take a player up in the batting order and rounding the bases. Different drills involving Ping-Pong balls, tennis balls, hammer, tee's will all make a difference before we get to pick up the bat. Once we pick up the bat, it is a process of steps starting with the lead foot and working up to extension and follow-through. Everything is broken down step by step, piece by piece.
Bunting and slapping are also broken down and the batter will learn concepts from a player, catcher, and umpire's standpoint.
A trick that I like to extend is that training for the catcher position is one way that will benefit a player no matter what position during the season she will be asked to play. The skills learned as a catcher make a better, more well-rounded player. I like to think of each session broken down into segments, and then built upon session by session like a staircase. Framing, blocking, POP TIME, can all be enhanced by the drills I have learned over the years.

Mary Beth is an excellent and patient coach. She started my daughter from the beginning by teaching her the mechanics and hitting off the "T". She then progressed to the next level when my daughter felt comfortable. My daughter learned a lot and enjoyed herself. Highly recommend.

Coach Marybeth was AMAZINGGGG. I learn A lot in Just one session. Definitely can't wait to book more.

Organized, on time, engaging and most of all extremely knowledgeable about the position of catcher.

Ten minutes into my daughter's first session and I knew I had made the right choice. MaryBeth clearly has a lot of expertise to share, she's encouraging and fun. Can't wait for our next session with her!

Coach MaryBeth was very nice and incredibly knowledgeable about softball. She ran my daughter through hitting drills in a fun way. My daughter really enjoyed the hour session and asked if she could do another session with MaryBeth.

...She has had a wild HS career, one that without your impact probably would've been cut short. I just want to thank you for being a strong influence in her softball days. Your name always comes up, sometimes about workouts, but mainly how much she enjoyed working with you. They just played Riverside in the D1 District semifinal and won it 1-0. I cant tell you how many compliments she has gotten on her abilities, framing in particular and handling a D1 college commit pitcher. She always credits her time with you in developing that. It's just a cool thing to see and I wanted to reach out and say Thank You!...
MaryBeth is a very dedicated, hardworking, and a very patient person. She has great knowledge of softball and anyone that she coaches will definitely benefit.
