More About Coach Mark

I have been a private basketball coach for over 4 years working with players of all ages and skill levels. Past experience includes working at the Polar Bear Basketball Camp (Bowdoin College) and Shooting Starts Summer Camp (Ashland, MA). In my sessions, I incorporate the skills and drills I learned from my private coaching lessons as a player at both the high school and collegiate levels.

College:
- Four year varsity letterman
- Played in school-record 105 games
- Team Captain senior year
- Voted team MVP senior year
- Led team in points junior and senior year
- 20th player in school history to score 1,000pts
- 2010 honored first team All-NESCAC
- 2010 first team All-Maine
- 2010 d3hoops.com second team North East Region
- 2010 MMBCWA Field Goal Percentage Leader
- Career field goal percentage (60.6%) ranks third all-time in school history
- 2010 NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-American

The level and age of the player will determine how a session is run. A typical session will begin with a light warm-up period of lay-up drills followed by dynamic and static stretching. After warming up, I like players to focus on form-shooting drills for 5-10 minutes. The core of each session will consist of introducing and developing offensive skills. For post-players, we will primarily work on low-post and mid-post moves. For guards and wing players, we will work on ball-handling, moving-without-the-ball, dribble-drive moves, and squaring up from the wing. I try to emphasize positioning, footwork, and shooting mechanics to ensure that every move made on the basketball court is done with maximum efficiency and explosiveness. I'm always happy to work any specific areas the player would like to work on.

Coach Mark is an incredible coach! So far my son has had one lesson with Coach Mark, and I'm already extremely impressed with his knowledge, skill, talent, enthusiasm, and effective communication skills to influence and guide my son to be able to make real breakthroughs, and I know he will create a lasting change. We knew he was the right fit instantly and plan to continue an ongoing training plan with Coach Mark!

My 12 year-old son had his first lesson with Mark this afternoon, and my son really enjoyed working with him. The lesson started with a series of warm-up exercises, followed by rebounding drills, shooting, and dribbling. Throughout each exercise Mark clearly explained the importance of the drill, and repeatedly demonstrated the drill. Mark was positive throughout the session and refused to let my son get down on himself. Mark is a very patient and disciplined coach that I can recommend without hesitation. A tribute to the success of the lesson was that my son was so motivated by what he learned, he came home and practiced outside for well over an hour in 30 degree temperatures!

Coach Mark was outstanding. My 15 year old son had a great skills training session and was shown proper techniques in a supportive and relatable way. Super nice guy and he knows his stuff. Looking forward to working with Coach Mark again very soon.

Great 1st session for my son with coach Mark. Son is excited to continue his training with coach Mark.

Learned a lot from him

Mark was great. He put together a great program for a group of kids that included footwork/jumping drills, ball handling, dribble drives and shooting. We was well prepared, prompt, responsive and easy to work with. He also has access to indoor facilities in the area which is important.

I had a great first session with Mark. He offered a bunch of great tips to help me improve my game. I would definitely recommend coach Mark.

Coach Mark is a very gifted coach. He is both patient and insistent. In only a few sessions, he has not helped my son improve his basketball skills but also reignited his passion or the game itself. Coach Mark has my highest recommendation!

Mark has been working with my son for a few months now. Mark is extremely personable and professional plus it's obvious he really enjoys working with kids. Looking forward to more session with coach mark

Coach Mark P was excellent to work with! He worked with my son in those areas he needed/wanted to focus on. Mark was very intentional in his teachings and kept focus on the tasks and desired outcomes. He listened to my son, providing tactical and strategic insights to make the sessions challenging for him. Mark even following up with a summary of each session, providing us the ability to review and continue to work on the betterment of his game. Thanks Coach Mark - we will be back soon!

Our 15 year old had her first session with Coach Mark this past week and it was excellent. She explained to Coach the 4-5 areas she felt she needed to work on to improve her skill sets. Coach Mark first showed her strength and conditioning exercises then put her through some drills to evaluate her skills AND conditioning. He then went through the some great low/mid post drills while explaining the reasoning behind the moves, free throw shooting, and some of the other areas of interest including defensive sets and 1:1 coverage. There was an immediate and noticeable improvement in her "athletic moves" as well as her gaining a better understanding of "the game within the game" within the hour. We look forward to more sessions with Coach Mark as we feel he has the right approach and experience to accelerate her overall skills at the 3/4/5 positions, improve her knowledge of the game and help her increase her strength and most importantly her confidence. Thanks Coach Mark and see you soon.

Coach Mark is extremely professional and knowledgeable! What I like best is that he will tailor his sessions to the individual needs of the player. My son plays on a high level high school team, and he has learned more REAL post moves with Mark in one hour than he did in one week of camp! It's rewarding to watch my son leave the sessions learning things that are brand new and then be able to use them right away in game situations!

My 15 year old son has had 4 sessions with Coach Mark Phillips and we have seen a dramatic improvement in his basketball skills. My son's footwork and technique has greatly improved. We asked for some assistance in improving low-post and some mid-post moves and Coach Mark responded with several specific moves to improve scoring opportunities in the Post. He also reinforces moves from previous sessions and tailors the sessions to my son's specific needs. I would strongly recommend Coach Phillips to any player looking to improve his basketball skills.

We had a terrific first experience with Mark and will be using him again. We would also have ZERO hesitation to refer him to others. He is a skilled coach who has a lot to teach and realizes the value of giving "homework" to athletes to do on their own.

Mark was very responsive and coordinated the session very quickly. He showed up early and stayed a little extra with my son. Since it was the first session, he went over a number of basics in basketball and some initial drills so that he could get to know my sons talent level. My son really enjoyed working with Mark and would be interested in booking additional sessions. I would certainly recommend him to other parents.

My 14 year old son had a great first session with Coach Mark that covered a lot of ground! From agility skills, to ball handling to foot skills and shooting, it was a great baseline for future lessons. We would definitely recommend Coach Mark as a trainer and look forward to working with him again.

Mark has been a great coach for my 12 year old son. From the first day, we were impressed with his teaching techniques. He combines conditioning with also skills in basketball. After every lesson, he leaves a detailed email on what he worked on that lesson. My son's confidence has built with only a few lessons and he always looks forward to the next lesson. I highly recommend Mark.

Mark was great with my son and really showed him new ways to train and also helped him improve on things that he may not have even known he needed improvement on. I would highly recommend him.

Coach Mark P. is a superb coach. This was our first experience with CoachUp and was a fantastic start. Our introductory session covered a lot of ground, laying the foundation for improvement on footwork, defense, passing, and shooting. He was terrific with my son - with great command of the game, excellent instruction, and a very nice way about him. We are already looking forward to our next sessions.

My son has been working with Coach Mark for about six months. He is very patient, and relates well to my son, who is 12. I have been impressed with the improvements that my son has made in terms of his skills, particularly his offensive play, but the biggest change is in his confidence. He is a far more confident player than he was six months ago. He also has a much better understanding of the game, and what is a good play to initiate. His coaches have all noticed a significant improvement since last season. I would highly recommend Coach Mark.

Coach Mark has great knowledge and experience and has been able to improve my footwork and range of weapons in the post significantly.

I was very impressed with Coach Mark and this was just after one session with my 13 year old son. In all honesty, my wife and I were a bit weary of dropping $80+ dollars for a one hour session of one on one training; however, we were so encouraged by what we saw that we have decided to book multiple sessions with Coach Mark. We selected Coach Mark because of his areas of expertise, post moves and improving footwork, which are areas my son needs to work on most. Coach Mark did not disappoint. He put my son through some great drills and had my son working the full hour. In fact, he even stayed with him about 10 minutes after our session was up. Great first impression! We look forward to seeing the basketball player my son can become with consistent training with Coach Mark!!

Coach Mark responded quickly to all of our queries, and he was very accommodating when it came to re-scheduling a session when we had car trouble. His training sessions are very organized, and so my son spent the entire hour (minus water breaks) doing productive drills. Mark has a calm, easy-going demeanor, and he developed a good rapport with my son.

Mark is a Great coach ! After just one session with him, my son's enthusiasm is right back on the game. Mark gave him drills he can work on between sessions and picked up on his weaknesses very quickly. He then focused right in on strengthening those areas. I immediately went right back on to Coach Up and signed up for more sessions.

Our son has had several different types of private coaching experiences over the last couple of years on Swimming, Basket Ball, Tennis, and baseball. Coach Mark definitely stands out with the best overall quality and results. The primary goal for our summer with Mark is to help our 9-year-old son polish up the basic skills and make the town travel team. He has been playing YMCA basketball since he was 6, but never had any formal training on movement, ball handling, lay-ups and jump shots. Mark helped us close this gap very efficiently, and the kid likes and respects the coach a lot.
The style of coaching is very formal and calm, which really get the kid focused from the 1st minute. I would say the efficiency of the lesson is very high. The communication and feedback we got from Mark is very helpful. Full page emails from Mark after a practice is not uncommon.

Coach Mark has a great approach when working with youth basketball players. Coach Mark is currently working with my 12 year old son who is a 6 foot Center going into 7th grade. For any youth Center/Forward, playing offense with your back to the basket is very challenging. Coach Mark's style builds confidence and demonstrates detailed techniques and workouts that provide excellent results. Our sessions include foot work, pivoting, post moves, big man contact and shooting. The sessions are very focused and a lot of fun. Working out with Mark has truly inspired my son and he can't wait for the next session. Following a recent workout with Coach Mark; my son went into AAU tryouts and impressed evaluators with his new low post moves. It was great to see the session work translate to the court in very short period of time. Highly recommended.

Coach Mark is a great teacher/coach! My son has enjoyed both sessions and looks forward to more. Coach Mark does a great job at setting expectations, giving detailed/constructive coaching, reviewing what was taught with my son and me and giving reinforcing "homework." Coach Mark also weaves in a little history of basketball to explain the meaning of drills, etc. I strongly recommend Coach Mark.

A very good first session, and we are looking forward to the next session.

Coach Mark has been a wonderful find for my son. He is very prompt and flexible with his bookings. My son looks forward to each session with much enthusiasm. I have seen a bit more confidence in him since starting with Mark, which is just what he needs!!!

My 13 year old son has learned a lot from Coach Mark and has already benefited from his 3 sessions with him. He is continuing to work with Coach Mark and looks forward to their sessions.

We were referred to Mark by a fellow parent on my son's AAU 14U team. My son is 6'2" and built like an offebnsive lineman, so his footwork could always be improved. Like may 14 year old kids when I told him I set up a private session his immediate response was negative. "I don't want to go!" But I explained to him he needed the help and to just try it. That Coach Mark is a big guy like him, knows what he is going through on the court, and will know what to teach him. When I picked my son up he said it was great and asked when we were going to do it again. Coach taught him proper position to post up, worked on his shooting form, and ran drills with him to better help him with his speed.
I would highly recommend Coach Mark to any one looking for a CoachUp session

Took my son for his first session with coach Mark and it was an excellent session,my son definitely liked it, he already is working on what he learned from coach Mark and I already see the difference on his game and the confidence that he got, we definitely going back for more sessions !!! Thanks coach Mark !!

Great first session! My son really enjoyed working with Coach Mark. He has already picked up valuable tips and drills to improve his basic fundamentals. We look forward to developing some new low post moves and advanced skills in subsequent sessions.

Mark has done a great job teaching my 16 year old post moves, and the pick and roll. Mark is very experienced in these areas and is good at communicating and demonstrating essential details. As an avid player, fan, and coach for many years, I was surprised at how much I learned from watching a few sessions with my son.

Coach Mark was great! My son is 9 and just starting out. Mark got him up and running right away. We saw improvement in skills and confidence in 1 session. My son can't wait for more.

Coach Mark has done a great job working with my 15 year old daughter. She came in to brush up on her skills in preparation for high school basketball tryouts and really enjoyed the workouts and coaching. She has made the team and will now be continuing her work with Mark during the season to hone her technique.

My 14 year old just finished his second session with Mark. Like many parents, for years I have been shuffling my son to AAU practices and games. I believe in two sessions with Mark, my son got more personalized advice than he got from all his AAU coaches combined. Mark has a great coaching disposition and clearly knows the game well. I am quite pleased with Mark;s coaching drills, style and delivery.

T had his first session with Mark. Mark provided a very balanced session with a sound focus on fundamentals. He did a warm-up and agilities focusing on key basketballs skills. Drills included fundamental shooting skills which my son really needs. Mark has a really nice, patient style with kids. He was able to break things down and explain the important details of the skills that will enable T to execute them well. T had a great time and is looking forward to more training with Mark.

Eric really enjoyed working with Mark. He was great! Mark really helped fine tune several things for Eric. We will definetely be scheduling more sessions with him. Thanks!

Mark has been a wonderful coach for my daughter. He has worked to teach her basic fundamental skills. He is excellent at breaking every thing down and explaining position strategy. His encouragement and support have really motivated her!

Mark is an excellent one-on-one basketball coach, and provides effective instruction in "big man" post moves, shooting mechanics and other fundamentals. His sessions have a logical progression and make the most use of the time. Mark also emphasizes focus at the end of the game (when tired) to implement the skills learned.

All-in-all Mark does a great job developing basketball skills. My son has attended many different basketball programs, but has progressed further with Mark than in any other camp or skills development setting.
