More About Coach Kelsie

My coaching experiencing began my freshman year of high school, when I began working at a basketball summer camp. Since then, I have not stopped and have expanded my coaching experience and knowledge much further. In the past eight years I have coached athletes ages 4 -18 in field hockey, lacrosse, and basketball. I have coached clinics, summer camps, recreational teams, travel teams, high school program, and lead collegiate programs. In addition, I hold a degree in Health and Physical Education from William Paterson University, where I acquired adequate knowledge from motion and skill analysis, and other coaching courses. I am the Co-founder and Head Coach of the Gold Field Hockey Program located in West Milford, NJ, a Lead Coach for Falcon Athletics Field Hockey Club, and the Interim Head Coach at Ramapo College.

My field hockey career began in 2013, when I was in 7th grade on the local youth travel team. My freshman year (2015) I was the starting goalie for the JV team, while also seeing time on defense and forward. My sophomore year of high school I was the starting left back and attained Honorable Mention All-Conference and 2nd Team All-County. This same year I helped lead my team to an overtime win to become 1st Place in the Passaic County Tournament. I suffered a major knee injury that spring in lacrosse but with hard work and dedication returned to the field Junior year, starting again at left back. I was awarded 2nd Team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-County and with my team again, won the Passaic County Tournament. My senior year I was named captain and started left back. I was awarded 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-County, 3rd team All-State, and named WMHS Athlete of the Week, a Top 10 Player in Passaic County, a Senior All-Star, and received the Most Dedicated Award and the Coach's Award. I helped lead my team to the Passaic County Finals and State Sectionals Semifinals. (Fun fact: My senior year I also held every stat; goalie save, goal line save, assist, and goal) I played club field hockey with G-Force all four years of high school, traveling to the National Field Hockey Festival and various indoor tournaments. I was recruited by multiple colleges at all three levels, but ultimately choose a school where I would not be playing. After a semester without the sport, I knew I needed it back. I transferred to William Paterson University where I started all but one game in my career. I saw time on all three lines of the field; defense, midfield, and was part of the NJAC Championship team.

Sessions are typically an hour but can be adjusted as needed. The first session, I focus on the athlete's capabilities, seeking to discover their strengths and weaknesses. Between this and communication with the athlete, I develop a plan with in the given time frame to help the athlete achieve their goals and improve both their skills and tactics. After the first session, the plan will be implemented, and athletes will be working the full hour, so they should come prepared, suited and stretched, so they get a complete hour of training. We will go through a series of drills and have discourse to develop that days focus. I hope to also develop the athlete as a player and teammate, instill values represented in my coaching philosophy.
There are three main components to my coaching philosophy:
1) Sports are 90% mental. So to me it important that I prepare my athletes not just physically but also mentally. I try to make every drill and situation as game-like as possible, so you know not only how to perform the skill, but when to perform it.
2) You should be competent in any position. A versatile player will always be one of the strongest players on the field and a valuable resource to the team. By knowing how to perform each position, an athlete will know how to defend/ attack when the roles are reverse. I credit my success as a forward in college, to my experience as goalie because I know exactly what the goalie is thinking and what is most difficult for her. Therefore, I focus on my athletes specific position, but also allocate time in my sessions to helping them understand the skills and knowledge of other positions.
3) Lastly, your attitude will determine your altitude. The most controllable thing as an athlete is your attitude. If you come to each session prepared, and giving 100% I can assure you, you will see improvement.
As we work through these sessions, I may reassess the athlete at some point, attend a game, or ask for game film to ensure the plan is help them to reach their fullest potential. I may also instruct the athlete to watch game, to help them analyze and advance their actual game performance.
