More About Coach Katie

I have done softball lessons and coached since I was 16 years old. I have coaches travel teams, rec teams, and high school teams and trained all ages in all areas and aspects of softball. My specialties are instructing pitchers, outfielders, and slappers.
I have trained athletes in pitching from the age of 8-18, working with beginners and trouble shooting pitchers who have been pitching for years.
I have also worked with both young and older ages at being effecting left side slap hitters.

I competed in college as an outfielder and pitcher in college, I played for two years before having a career ending knee injury. I broke the stolen base record at my college my sophomore year and earned all-american honors.

In pitching lesson, I like to start with a basic warm up. I make sure my pitchers arms are warm, hopefully the can arrive a little early to throw over hand with their catcher so that we can just straight into pitching warms ups. I generally start with open shoulder knee drills to work on the arm circle and release point and then we stand up and move in to the basic K drill. From here every pitcher is different, they all have 1-2 drills that are player specific depending on their deficiencies or specific things they need to work on. For beginner pitchers the first month or two this could be the end of the lesson, because it can take some time to perfect these before they actually get any mound time, for older more consistent pitchers I ask that they arrive early and go through this whole routine so that they we can jump straight into pitching and work on placement and different pitches and spins.
In mound pitching we generally try and throw about 50 pitches, depending on the pitcher we will work on inside and outside, hitting our 4 corners and then work different pitches if we need to.
I am not a 6 pitch, pitching coach. My pitchers will work on perfecting thier fast ball, change-up, and drop ball first, working to make sure that each is consistent before adding an additional pitch. Next they will learn another spin pitch when they are a little older and their elbow ligaments are mature enough to get the spin correct without overusing their elbow. This is a tedious process and a lot of parents and girls get frustrated because they see other pitcher their age with 5-6 pitches, I work with my pitchers on having effecting placement, velocity, and form to ensure longevity and with 3-4 pitches. These perfected pitches make pitchers more efficient and confident in my experience.
