More About Coach Kala

I've been coaching soccer for the last 11 years. I began my coaching career as a coach for a U-7 co-ed team during my last year of high school. From there, as I began my college playing career, I began coaching high school soccer. I started out as the JV soccer coach at La Mirada High School (La Mirada, CA) and then went on to be an Assistant Varsity coach at Beckman High (Tustin, CA). During that time, I also began working with individual players privately and worked with both field players and goalkeepers. I've also worked for a variety of summer camp and evening clinic programs, working with kids of all ages, as young as 4. In addition, I coached for one year at Hope International University as an Assistant Coach for the women's team and Goalkeeper Coach for both the men's and women's sides. Most recently I was a coach at Samueli Academy (Santa Ana, CA) and worked with both the JV and Varsity programs for 4 years there.

In high school, I was a First Team All CIF player, First Team All League Player, and First Team All County Player multiple times. I played goalkeeper and recorded record numbers of shut outs every season. I also excelled as a field player, but because of my height, played goalkeeper for most of my career. From there, I went on to play D1 soccer at University of CA Irvine where I didn't get to play as much, but battled for a starting spot with some of the best players in the country. Many of my teammates went on to play professionally in the US and abroad.

I run very high intensity training sessions. I want to make the best of the 60-90 minutes we have together. I do a quick, efficient warm up that not only warms up the body, but helps on skills or agility as well. Then, depending on the player, I like to do fundamental ball work (for a more skilled player, this looks more advanced and complex, but still is working on that comfort and closeness with the ball). Last, I like to spend some time working on more complex aspects of the game, positioning, movement off the ball, timing and balance between patience and urgency for moving the ball forward etc. At the end of the day, I want my sessions to make that player feel good, feel fit, feel confident and excited for their next game, so if something isn't working or helping them, I'm open to feedback and adjustments to meet their needs.
