More About Coach Kahalewai

I have been coaching shot put and discus since the 1996-97 season at Pacifica High(Garden Grove) and retired in 2016. With so many on the throws team and only one throws coach, newcomers don't receive the needed basics to be competitive. My goal as a Coach Up coach is to help the beginning thrower succeed in the throwing events. As a discus coach, I will show with great patience and experience, the proper power position, proper release, how to use your legs in the throw, how to block, and how to come out of the back of the ring. With the shot putter, I will show the thrower the proper standing throw, the release, steps to learn the glide, the block in the glide. Also I will trouble shoot any problems that the more experienced thrower may be experiencing in their throws. Problems in the discus throw that I can help correct are 1) out of bounds throws, left and right 2) wobbly throws 3) landing too far on the right side of the ring 4)landing too far on the left side of the ring 5)discs that peel during the flight 6) lack of balance in the spin 7) lack of height in the flight of the discus. 8)problem of right foot shutting down in the middle of the ring(right hand thrower) 9) Late left leg from out of the back of the ring 10) Staying torqued in the throw 11) Late left leg landing in the front of the ring. 12 Falling out of the front of the ring.

I played football at Rancho Alamitos High School where I won all league honors as an offensive lineman in 1971. My greatest honor was when I won the USC Trojan Club high school lineman of the week for my play against Valencia. I wrestled and did track and field as a 10th grader.

I will use 4 different tools in developing the discus thrower: 1)standing throws, 2)half spins, 3)south africans and 4)full throws. With the standing throws, I emphasize keeping your eyes on focal points, blocking and throwing the discus with a good angle of release. With the half spins, I try to emphasize staying torqued, being linear with your legs and getting your left foot down at the front quickly. With the south Africans, I emphasize driving towards a target, landing in a good balanced position and staying on your right foot. With the full spin, I try to get the athlete to stay balanced coming out of the back, keeping the sweep the leg low, staying level (no diving into the middle), driving towards a target, and turning and staying on top of the right foot. With the shot put, will work on drills that will emphasize turning the hips, getting across the ring, staying back and lifting. Through out the 2 hour session, I will take video of the throws and email the film with analysis to the athlete.

Coach Kahalewai went through a lot of new drills with my son and helped him improve his shot after one lesson. He was very patient and my son really enjoyed working with him. He’s looking forward to training with him in the future!

After just one lesson, my son felt more confident and learned new techniques. In addition, Coach Alan did adjustments to his existing techniques and left him with concepts to take back home to practice on until their next session.

Extremely helpful with my girls development as a shot putter.

Coach Kahalewai was great for my son. He took his time and worked very well with him. After just one session my sons form has improved.

Coach Kahalewai has worked out perfectly for my son. Coach K makes the skills involved with shot put and discus look easy, but it's clear to us that it's going to take a lot of hard work to have some success. We were anxious to get in some sessions during the winter break, and Coach K's availability was excellent. We're hopeful that Coach K will be available once the season starts up. The commute for us is somewhat long, but our time with Coach K has been worth the extra effort. He has been excellent in every regard - from technique and skills needed, to drills, equipment, and strength conditioning involved with the sport. The two-hour long sessions are just right for us, and we're looking forward to upcoming sessions.

He done great with my son. Can't wait till next session!

Coach Kahalewai is now teaching me the mechanics of the full spin throw. He uses video of my throws to identify areas to work on. I am getting a lot out of my sessions with Coach Kahalewai and his instruction is helping me improve at a much faster rate.

Coach Alan is a great coach. He is able to assess strengths and spot areas that need improvement through proper technique.

Coach Kahalewai is an amazing coach. My daughter is a first year thrower as a freshman and has only had one lesson. He worked mostly with her standing throw mechanics and by the end of our session, she threw discus 12 feet further and shot put 4 1/2 feet further than she did on her last Track Meet 2 days prior. We can't wait for her next lesson and would highly recommend Coach Kahalewai.

My son had a great session with coach Alan. He was very positive and encouraging. We Will definitely train with him again.

My son was able to learn quite a bit about the techniques of the shot put and discus from Coach Alan during his first session.
Coach Alan was patient and positive. We look forward to future lessons with Coach Alan.

Friendly. A great coach for anyone looking to break into track and field (discus and shotput) for the first time.
