More About Coach Julian

Soccer-Coaching:
I have been coaching soccer for the past seven years. My first experiences were over in Germanym where I helped the academy of VfL Bochum, a 2nd Devision Bundesliga Club in Germany. The German system was very focused on individual / position specific improvement at this time. Therefore, we did many personal sessions next to the regular training schedule. Regularly, we would take different small groups, twice a week and do specific drills. One day we would work on finishing with both feet for strikers, another day we would work with our midfielders on improving their first touch under pressure. Every player has different strength and weaknesses, especially in a young age. Through the development program we created, I was able to work with a variety of kids, both boys & girls, as well as youth national team players. I was fortunate to coach with and learn from of one of the best soccer academies in Germany. All the youth teams of VfL Bochum participate at the highest level in Germany, The Youth Bundesliga.
In 2014, I left Germany to pursue a business degree at Syracuse University. While playing for the university team, I also coached clinics and camps during my free time. After I got drafted in 2016, I continued coaching for the Arlington Soccer Association, where I primarily worked as a specific skill coach. Every Monday and Tuesday, I worked with six different groups where I helped players improve on specific skills assigned by the head coach. In those 45 min sessions, we would build on monthly topics. The emphasis was on the technical form, but we ensured to explain the how and why we should use those skills in the game. After seeing how effective my coaching strategies were, some of the parents asked if I would privately coach with their kids so they could fully develop. I now devote most of my time to private coaching because I enjoy how much deeper I can connect with individual players and customize our training to help them grow as players. In February of this year, I relocated to Los Angeles to start my next chapter as a player for the L.A. Galaxy.

Hello everybody,
My name is Julian Buescher & I’m a German footballer player who currently plays for LA Galaxy. Prior to playing for the Galaxy, I played college soccer for the Syracuse University. After I got selected 11th overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United, I made my professional debut on February 23, in a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match against Queretaro F.C.. On March 1, I scored my first professional goal in the return leg of the Champions League against Queretaro, in a 1-1 draw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fblNzLQJF6A).
During my time in D.C., I appeared in 27 MLS games in and scored 5 goals.  Before my time in the MLS, I was a two-year starter at Syracuse University from 2014-15. I was a key player in central midfield and helped lead Orange to NCAA College Cup in 2015. I also received the NCAA all-tournament honors, first team all-American, and first team all-ACC, after leading team with 11 assists and scored eight goals while starting all 25 games. I was also named to all-ACC Tournament team after helping lead seventh-seeded Syracuse on four-game run to tournament title, including advancing on the road against No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Clemson and No. 4 Notre Dame

Since every player has different strength and weaknesses, I like to first take time to evaluate where each individual before we start getting into drills. Even watching the players dribble through some cones or juggle the ball allows me a pretty good understanding of their technical ability. After I have an idea of how to best customize my work to the player’s needs, I then communicate with the parents and coaches to make sure the plan and coaching techniques I use will be a good fit for the individual in. I case of a strike, I would work on setting yourself up well to get good looks to score goals in a game, their first touch, striking the ball and more. In this and all cases, every technique and drill I select depends on the specific individual.

Coach Observation—Julian Buescher Saturday, October 14 th, I went to watch one of the youth teams of the Arlington Soccer Association based in Virginia. When I arrived at the soccer field I observed two coaches standing on different side lines, talking to their teams. After watching the game for a while I recognized the communication styles of the coaches were totally different. For what I saw, the coach of ASA, who was Julian Buescher, a professional soccer player for Major Leauge Soccer team D.C. United, was very calm all the time. He composedly stood there, analyzing the game and gave his young kids direct commands, which they seemed to understand easily and tried to work on in the game immediately. I think one of reasons is that most of the time his team had been possessing the ball and stringed passed together, which seemed to be one of his philosophies. Watching it from the outside was somewhat impressive since I have not seen a youth team playing that composed. An additional factor that I thought was helpful and different from the other coach, was that Julian Buescher, seemed to understand the importance of a halftime talk and its communication. During the pause time, he brought the whole group in a circle, pat his team members on their shoulders and talked to them positively and gave direct advise of how and where they could improve to play even better. From observing Julian Buescher, I can saw that he has a characteristically strong influence on his team and its condition. As a leader and a manager of the team, enough wisdom, governing forces and affinity are needed for a team’s development. It is such an important factor and was interesting to see that someone can bring those characteristics into a youth team. I know is hard to comment the stand or fall of a coach by one single game but it was easy for me to observe Coach Julian’s positive personality. Kevin Feucht
