More About Coach J.R.

For the past three summers I have trained middle school, high school and collegiate athletes in the Denver Metropolitan area. I have focused on general speed, agility and strength development in a variety of athletes, including track & field, basketball, and football players. Additionally, I have incorporated track & field specific workouts for track athletes competing in sprinting and jumping events, namely the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints as well as the long jump and triple jump. I have worked with athletes in a wide range of skill levels, from those who are new to the sport, to those who compete at the division I level.

I was a member of the varsity Track & Field team at Duke University. There, during my senior year, I became the captain of the Men's team. I had the pleasure of being on one of Duke's fastest recorded 4x100m teams in school history and became a top five long jumper in program history. Additionally I earned All-ACC Academic honors all four years of my collegiate career.

I begin with developing a training regimen personalized for the athlete. For high school and collegiate athletes I incorporate weight training, speed training and skill training. For younger athletes I tend to avoid weight training and utilize more body-weight strength exercises. During strength training I initially develop proper lifting techniques and then focus on explosive, olympic lifting exercises, including cleans and jerks. All speed and skill workouts are determined by the event that the athlete is interested in. All workouts, including weight training, begin with an intensive warm-up. During speed and skill training, I will work on acceleration with both sprinters and jumpers. Sprinters will then move to top-speed training and sprint endurance while jumpers will transition to jump mechanics and additional strength training. All workouts will conclude with light intensity injury prevention exercises and a cool down. I currently work for CU Sports Medicine and Performance and I bring science and medical evidence into every training session to get the most out of each workout in the safest way.
