More About Coach Josh

I am a Mental Performance Coach with degrees and training in Sport and Exercise Psychology, specializing in working to develop the mental skills needed for peak performance in athletes, as well as assisting athletes of all ages and levels as a part of their return to sport post injury. In addition, I work with coaches, rehabilitation professionals, and others across a wide variety of disciplines to develop the mental skills they need to bring ensure that themselves and their teams are operating at their best.

Over the past few years I have performed this role in a number of ways. First, I currently operate my own consulting business working with athletes and coaches across a wide variety of sports and disciplines in Calgary, Canada. During this time, I have also been focused on collaborating with other injury rehabilitation professionals to assist their clients in having a successful return to sport and physical activity. Previous to this I spent 2 years working with several soccer teams in Greece as their Mental Performance Consultant, focused on helping the athletes and coaches develop and sustain a growth-oriented mindset, as well as develop routines to deal with competition anxiety, learn to focus on quality of training not just quantity, and maintain focus under pressure - several of the athletes that I worked with are now competing on the Greek U17 and U19 national soccer teams.

As a youth athlete, I played many different sports, with most played at an elite level. For instance, as a part of my volleyball, in the last 4 years before university we were able to achieve 3 silver medals at Canadian National Championships, as well as a 5th place finish. In addition, during this time we also attended the US Junior Olympics (the national championships for youth volleyball in the US) twice, winning a gold and a bronze in the club division, which was the only division we were eligible to compete in coming from another country. Beyond volleyball, as a youth athlete I also competed at a high level in Ice Hockey, while also participating in a wide variety of other sports such as rowing, golf, ultimate Frisbee, squash, and badminton.

I did also initially attend university on an athletic scholarship for volleyball, but unfortunately re-aggravated an old knee injury early on in the season and had to retire. It was during this time however that I began to truly develop my passion for and interest in Psychology and Sport.

While all of my sessions will differ in some ways depending on the client, they all follow the same overarching structure:
1. Assess - Initial sessions are focused on identifying areas for potential growth, as well as the individuals current mental skills
2. Plan - Based on the results of this assessment, a mental skills training plan will be developed and discussed with the client
3. Implement - Once the client is comfortable, the agreed upon mental skills training program begins to be worked on.
4. Review - At periodic intervals, the ongoing mental skills program will be evaluated to find ways in which it can be adjusted or improved

In order to get a full picture of the clients opportunities for growth, and their existing strengths from a mental skills point of view, Mental Skills Assessments lasting 90 minutes are used early on in the coaching process when possible.

Once the initial session has been completed, and a plan has been agreed upon, each following session will generally consist of three separate parts: a discussion of how things have gone since the last session in general; a discussion of how the mental skills work has been going so far, including any improvements or alterations that may be needed; an introduction to and work on the next aspect of the mental skills training plan.

Client Reviews

Josh worked as a sports psychologist in our team for one and a half year. He was always present in training and competitions, giving a solution to any problem that occurred with composure and thoughtfulness. At the same time he helped the team by proposing documented techniques to improve behavior and performance on the field.
His approach towards both myself and the players was outstanding. He helped a lot with my players, especially the work he did with players with self-confidence issues, as well as in enhancing players leadership skills and helping them to see what their potential could be. His advice was useful not only inside the sport arena but also for enhancing the girls performance in school and everyday life. Overall, the season when better than I had expected - there were a lot of new players causing changing team dynamics that I was afraid would be a problem, but Josh was able to help create team cohesion faster than I thought it would occur.
First of all he is an amazing person and very kind. (I think that) his work is incredible and I will explain what I mean. First time that Josh came to my team we were all doubting how can he helped us, but he found the way to approach us though an interesting conversation that we had. So from the first day he made us to feel comfortable and trust him. Also the ways that he uses for different situations are unique and he knows how to make you feel comfortable and talk as friends. He helped me a lot through the conversations that we had,he is a good listener. He helped me also to enhance my performance and being a better leader for my team because he believed in me.
