More About Coach Jon

2017 Boston Globe Coach of the Year, CAL Coach of the Year; Salem News Coach of the Year; Director of Rising Stars Camp; Head Coach of Hamilton-Wenham Basketball; MIAA cerftified coach; National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Cerftified coach. Currently training high school and college athletes from the U.S. and basketball player from Europe.
Over 20 years of high school coaching experience. Formerly, the head basketball coach at Hamilton-Wenham High School with past experience at Revere High School, and Lynnfield High School. Team advanced to the state semi-finals in 2014. I also worked at Championship Basketball School as a counselor and am now the Director of Rising Stars Basketball Camp.

Former players and athletes I train are being recruited to top Division I, II, and III schools, including Brown University, William & Mary; Princeton University; Bucknell University; Dickinson College, the University of Chicago, Amherst College etc. My HS players attended Rising Stars Camp prior to entering high school (youth level and middle school) and benefited from the focus on FUNdamentals and my ability to advance players at their own pace to help them take their game to the next level. I have been coached by NBA coaches like Mike Procopio of the Dallas Mavericks and worked with shooting specialist Dave Hopla.

Member of only RHS team to make the high school MIAA State Tournament 4 years in a row; 4-year member; 3-year starter, leading 3-point shooter and scorer
4-year member of Merrimack College Football Team; starting wide receiver (3 years); Northeast-10 Bronze Scholar Athlete; member of best team in school history (2004, 8-2)

Workouts will be different for youth players with little experience and advanced players. We will cater workouts to accommodate each individual player and focus on the skills they need to work on to become a better player. See below for a sample youth and advanced level workout.

YOUTH PLAYERS/INEXPERIENCED PLAYERS

At the youth level, I am able to work with players of all ability levels. Rising Stars Camp has players that have never played basketball before and others that are starters for their travel and AAU teams. I will focus on the FUNdamentals of the game with youth players and help them prepare for the next step in their basketball career. Workouts will be energetic, fun, and beneficial to the players.
1. FUNdamental Work (30 minutes): Form shooting (B.E.E.F.), proper layup footwork (using both hands with layups), 2-ball dribbling, 1-ball dribbling moves
2. Focus Work (20 minutes): Focus on a specific area of improvement for the day. Focus point can be everything from shooting and dribbling to passing, footwork and more.
3. Challenge (10 minutes): the last 10 minutes will challenge the players on their focus area to show improvement for the day

ADVANCED PLAYERS
As high school players, or advanced 6th-8th graders we continue to advance their skill set. I work with both post players and guards and was a 3-point shooting specialist as a player. We teach our players advanced moves like the Eurostep, jump stop, pull up jumpers, advanced dribbling moves, etc. Players will improve their shooting technique and work to become a 3-point shooting specialist. At 6'5", I can also work with post players on back to the basket moves and reverse pivot square up moves that will help them take their game to the next level I am also willing to assist high school players with the recruiting process.
1. Warm up (10 minutes): 2-ball dribbling, form shooting, etc...
2. Advanced dribbling/ layups (10 minutes) 1-ball dribbling with cones leading to layups or in some cases jump shots
3. Advanced layups (10 minutes): Eurosteps, floaters, jumpstops and layups from a number of angles
4. Focus Period (20 minutes): 3-point shooting, 1 on 1 scoring, pull up jumpers, post moves, etc....
5. Shooting Challenge (10 minutes): a variety of college and NBA level shooting drills will be incorporated, including the Duke Drill
*Plans will vary to accommodate individual athletes in the skills they need to work on the most.

Client Reviews

Coach Jon was really great. I was looking for a focus on rudiments for my 8-year old son, and Jon followed through while also keeping him engaged during the process. It goes without saying, but working with a skilled instructor like Jon provides a big advantage to a young athlete and we’re looking forward to more sessions in the future.

Coach Jon efficiently assessed my daughters skill set and set out a path for improvement. He took detailed notes and shared them with us after the session. He was personable and professional. We were impressed by him and will be continuing.

Joe was amazing at working with my beginner 12 year old son. He has such an enthusiastic approach with great patience thrown in. My son is looking forward to more sessions with him! Thanks Coach Jon!

Coach Jon met with my 5th grade daughter and led her through a great hour-long workout, zeroing in on fundamentals, introducing a solid set of drills, and running her through a timed obstacle course challenge — all while staying super positive & upbeat. Highly recommend!

Coach John is great my 11-year-old son needed a ton of fundamental help. He’s currently getting it but also is having a lot more fun with it. Looking forward to more sessions.

Coach Jon was great ! My daughter loved it and can’t wait for her next session. After his evaluation he is adding a few things to her game and is correcting a few bad habits she picked up along the way . He absolutely knows what he’s doing.Im looking forward to watching her play this upcoming aau season , can’t wait !

My daughter had an hour session with Coach Jon and it was really great. Coach Jon went back to basics and worked her hard on her techniques, ball skills and the fundamentals that kids often forget they have to learn in order to improve. It was a well spent hour and my daughter had a great time. I have no hesitation in recommending Coach Jon and we will be booking more sessions with him.

My son really enjoyed their session with Jon. He left feeling more confident and knowledgeable. Jon really knows what he's doing. We highly recommend him and will be booking again with Jon soon.

In just one lesson my son walked away with specific direction on how to improve his skills. Jon’s feedback was thorough and as a parent I have a very good understanding of the areas my son can improve and how Jon can help him. My son can’t wait for his next coaching session! Thank you, Jon!!

Coach Jon has been great working with my son this summer. My son is trying to get recruited and also get ready for high school season. Jon runs great drills working on speed and form as a result,my son has been performing well all summer.

She is truly enjoying the [Rising Stars] camp this week, thank you for all the hard work that has gone into it all. :) she was super proud of being "Camper of the Day" yesterday and we were too. :) hoping it will be mentioned in your blog. (She has been checking) Missy
