More About Coach Jamie

I have been coaching soccer since I graduated college in 2018. I have been the Head Coach of the Saint Mary’s College of California Men’s Club Soccer team since 2018. In three years, we have won back-to-back league championships (including completing combined back-to-back undefeated seasons). With the Club team I work with student-athletes ranging from 17-35 where we work specifically to improve technical skill and how an athlete’s skill set can impact the team at a tactical level. In addition to coaching college, I also coach high school boys at San Ramon Valley High School. I am currently the Head Coach of Freshmen Boys as well as the Assistant Coach for JV Boys (a position I have held the past three years). In that program we work specifically on development in all aspects of the game: technical ability, game recognition, positioning, and fitness. I currently hold a USSF Grassroots coaching license and will be moving onto the next level as soon as I can.

I started playing soccer when I was four years old on an indoor team. I fell in the love with the game and have continued playing. Growing up I played on a travel team competing in tournaments across the state. I started nearly every game and was a co-captain of team. Additionally, I also was recognized at a couple development camps as one of the top players as well as being invited to play in a youth tournament in the Netherlands. While completing my undergraduate degree, I played on the Club team eventually becoming one of the two rotating goalkeepers. We won multiple league titles and competed against the likes of Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. Additionally, while in college any intramural soccer competition, I played. Since graduating my love of the game has continued and pre-Covid I played weekly in an adult league.

Open the session with our goals of what we want to achieve and how we are going to do that. We will then move on into a dynamic warm up that involves getting the entire body moving and focusing specifically on lower body mobility. My philosophy when it comes to putting together a session is that it’s all about progression. After the warmup we will move on to technical work specifically focusing on using both feet, opening the hips, and getting a rhythm together. The drill itself may change occasionally but is generally set up as a triangle and we pass around using both feet and making sure we’re letting the ball run across our body. I will do technical drills no matter what the position is to start the session. After technical work we will move on to whatever the athlete wants or needs to improve gradually putting together all the components culminating in the final drill.
