More About Coach James

I played football and basketball off and on throughout middle school and high school, before joining the military, where I served in an operations and training role for most of a 22(+) career, responsible for the physical, emotional, and mental strength and conditioning of both Marines and Soldier. I have more than 13 years of coaching both youth football and AAU Track & Field, as well as training both my sons and their friends in strength & conditioning during and outside of the leagues and sports seasons. I am now retired from Active Duty, and have completed certifications in both personal training and nutrition, to enable me to work with youth athletes on a more full-time basis. I feel my coaching/training experience topped with years of leadership and mentorship experience allows me to offer more than basic fitness and conditioning training, by serving as another positive role model in the lives of our future leaders.

As my athletic accomplishments are few, I choose to focus on how I have helped others achieve their goals as accomplishments. I have had the opportunity to coach and train multiple nationally ranked AAU Junior Olympians in track & field, as well as seeing many of them continue competing at the collegiate level. I have two sons, one who is a 400m hurdler at Baylor University, maintaining a 3.3 GPA as a Finance & Economics double major in his Junior year. The second who is a 6’2”/165lb freshman in HS taking dual-credit and AP courses while maintaining a 4.17 GPA, who plays football (wide-receiver and free-safety) and runs track (4x400m relay, 300m hurdles, and 110m hurdles). Both understand the importance of being athletically and academically well-rounded.

We will begin with going over a basic health & physical assessment to identify any red flags or health issues that may need to be taken into consideration during training sessions. Physical assessments include jogging on a treadmill for 3-5 minutes while gradually increasing the speed to test the athlete’s cardiovascular health, conducting weightless squats to identify form and/or weakness in muscle groups causing improper form, and general fitness testing such as bench press, vertical jump, and broad jump.
A plan or progression map will be built to outline what it will take for the athlete to safely reach their goals. This is based on time, availability, and current fitness level and the program will be focused on the athlete’s specific sport(s) to ensure the correct type of training is conducted. i.e. a football lineman may want to bulk up and increase overall upper and lower body strength, while a receiver or safety may want to build more functional strength and improve agility.
