More About Coach Greg

I'm a USA Hockey, Level V certified coach.

I began my coaching career as a summer hockey camp counselor at a Wheatfield, NY summer hockey school staffed by several members of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. I went on to be both an assistant coach and head coach at the travel hockey level, working with 12-14 year olds.

After my playing days at NCAA Division II Brockport State University, I worked as a scout for the team, under the direction of EJ McGuire who went on to become the Director of Central Scouting for the NHL. During that time I also served as a player-coach for two high-level adult leagues that included several elite junior and NCAA Division 1 players. The first of those teams, which included a Calgary Flames draft pick who went on to have a long career in the NHL, went undefeated and won the league championship.

I next worked as a head coach at the high school level, and although I was a forward and defenseman as a player, I developed an expertise in training goaltenders. On two different occasions as a high school coach, I had to identify a player with little goaltending experience, and successfully train them to become the team’s starting goalie. During that time, I also put on a specialized clinic for area goaltenders.

In the most recent past, I’ve worked as an assistant coach for two American Collegiate Hockey Association teams (Mount St. Mary's University and Johns Hopkins University), where I’ve specialized in working with both the defense and goaltenders.

I played minor hockey, travel hockey, and three years of high school hockey while growing up in the Buffalo, New York area. I was named as an alternate captain of my high school team during my senior year, and finished my high school career as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

In addition, I played four years of NCAA Division II college hockey at Brockport State University, where I was also chosen an alternate captain during my senior year.

During my college playing days, I was also invited to skate with several of the Buffalo Sabres and other local professional players during their informal pre-training camp scrimmages.

After my playing days ended at Brockport, I served as a player-coach for two high-level adult leagues that included several elite junior and NCAA Division 1 players. I was one of the leading scorers on the first team, which went undefeated and won the league championship.

When I work with an athlete, I focus on their hockey sense (knowledge of the game), their athletic skills and their attitude since all three are key components of athletic performance.

I’ll first do an assessment of their hockey sense and athletic skills. Next, I work with them on the basic positioning and skills necessary to be successful at their position. Giving consideration to their current skill level, we’ll work together on developing and practicing an appropriate series of ongoing drills that will increase skill and muscle memory to optimize performance during future games.

The athlete and I will also collaborate on work plan for between our sessions, including improving hockey sense (watching videos online, watching live games) and practicing positioning and targeted skills including drills/exercises that can be practiced on or off the ice.

As we continue to work together, we’ll build up to practicing the positioning and skills we’ve been working on in competition (during skate and shoot sessions, during team practices & games, etc.). Ideally, I’ll also attend an occasional practice or game to provide feedback and/or make adjustments during our next sessions together.

From an attitude standpoint, I talk with the athlete to learn how they typically think about the sport, their abilities, etc., looking to identify any negative emotional or thought patterns that can limit their athletic success (performance anxiety, being too hard on themselves after a mistake, etc.). To help in this area, I’ll suggest more positive ways of thinking that can help improve the athlete’s enjoyment of the sport and their performance.

Greg spent my time efficiently with useful drills to improve my skating. His positive feedback helped increased not only my level of confidence to execute a drill but also my motivation to improve without sacrificing minor details to be your best.

Coach Greg has a calm confidence and advanced skill set perfectly suited to coach our 10 year old son. A perfect balance of fun and competitive instruction. Coach Greg has been one of the best things to happen for our son's hockey development!

My son has been trained by coach Greg for a while now and his skill is improving after each session. We ‘re extremely satisfied.
Thank you , Coach

Awesome coach and person. Very easy coaching style, very personable. Coach Greg will listen carefully to your goals and will help you to make it happen. I’ve been a dedicated goalie since day one and want to learn to skate out so I can be well rounded as a hockey player overall. My high school son has been taking privates with Coach Greg for the past year and has excelled well as a defenseman AND wing due to what he has learned.

Yesterday was my very first private with Coach Greg and after working on some basics I was doing half crossovers and a few successful full crossovers by the end of our session. I’ve tried these several times on my own with no success. Greg broke it down from explaining why we do certain skating movements, demoing the movement, and then having me do repeated reps and tweaking it until it was right. Very very effective learning method. Looking forward to the next lesson! Worth every penny. Thanks Greg!

Coach Greg was very helpful and I look forward I working with him more in the future.

I learned a lot while practicing with you. To start, you were friendly and recognized me in the main lobby and approached me prior to getting to the practice rink. Upon arrival at the rink you asked what I wanted to work on and we jumped right into it. Once you felt I was proficient in the area we moved to the next drill or added another piece to the same drill. I recommend that you sustain that as that helped me learn. You were reinforcing the positives that you saw and then addressing any issues that you saw. You were not mean or degrading when critiquing, you addressed the problem and the solution to fix it. Almost every time the solution was the correct one. You also gave me some more drills to practice on my own. I will be in touch again soon to schedule another session. I will recommend you anyone I come across that wants to learn how to play better.

So far we have just had a game play preview session. Greg was very informative and positive. He analyzed my daughter’s play and is developing a plan to work on specific areas. He spoke to her with a very positive manner which has made her excited about working with him.

We can't say enough positive things about Coach Greg. He is an awesome coach that has really helped to boost our son's defense skills. Coach Greg's positive feedback has helped to build our son's confidence both on and off the ice. Each lesson builds skill and character. Thank you Coach Greg!!

I have had two lessons with Greg and I can't say enough on how he has elevated me to the next level. My strides are so much faster and we worked on skating with puck around defense. I plan on many more lessons when he can fit me in.

Coach Greg is awesome! He is inspirational to the kids and very encouraging. Highly recommend.

I've done two sessions with Coach Greg and plan to continue training with him. I'm picking up hockey after more than 12 years. After two sessions with Coach Greg I feel it's all come back to me. We've covered the basic techniques and look forward to moving into more advanced techniques. Coach will first show you how to do an exercise and give you constructive positive feedback on what to improve. He is conscious of your skill and will push you further only when you are ready - at the same time he is encouraging and wants you to reach your potential. For adult aspiring players he makes sure you've covered the basics, gives you feedback and is open to letting you steer the session toward the areas you feel need the most work. He is personable, encouraging and plans your training with an eye on your personal end goal. I enthusiastically recommend him for both kids and adults learning to play for the first time or picking up hockey after many years.

Coach Greg did a great job accessing my skills and building the lesson around that. He was very encouraging and very helpful with transferring his hockey knowledge to player skills. Best coaching experience I've had.

Greg is a an amazing coach! I have learned so much for him. He's super nice and an absolute pleasure to work with. His hockey skills are incredibly impressive, but most importantly, he teaches hockey in a way that is easy to understand. Truly a fantastic instructor!

You won't find a better or more knowledgeable person to work with than Coach Greg. I'm amazed at how much ground we covered in just one session. He has helped improve all aspects of my game and helped improve my confidence on the ice, as well. I give him my highest possible recommendation. You will not be disappointed!

Coach Greg's approach to coaching significantly improve my approach and level of play in only 3 sessions. I signed up for 5 and feel it is worth the time and expense! Coach Greg is very in tune with the athlete he is working with and appropriate with the level of coaching and feedback. My teammates have commented on my change in play. I have recommended Coach Greg and Coach up to my current team and few other people in my hockey community. If anyone feels they are unsure about their abilities or feel they have hit a plateau, Coach Greg will move you along to the next level. carol c

Greg is the best! He is very encouraging and helpful. He teaches my son well with both support and challenge. He also goes beyond the call of duty in terms of what we hired him to do. I look forward to my son continuing to work with Greg in preparation for hockey season.

Coach Greg is an awesome coach. His knowledge of ice hockey, his patience, his ability to instill self confidence, and his methods of instruction are above and beyond others. Thanks Coach.

As a current varsity level high school coach, and former collegiate coach, I have high standards when it comes to the coaching profession. Our son just completed a season of Junior hockey. He needed to prepare for a hockey showcase. I stated to Coach that I was looking for skill development (in specific areas), an increase in his hockey I.Q, and his professional insight to my son’s ability. To be frank, Coach Greg exceeded every expectation that I had.

Before they even touched the ice, Coach showed up with background information on my son’s previous season and quickly assessed his strengths and weaknesses. In regard to preparing for the showcase, Coach Greg made a personal call to the showcase director to find out what drills would be run, what the format would be, and other aspects that helped my son mentally prepare for the event.

Utilizing his holistic approach, Coach Greg spent a great deal of time teaching grass roots fundamentals, and positive mental approaches. When my son had an off day, he was able to provide gentle reminders and encouragement that helped him regain his focus. As a person who has been on the ice since the age of four, our son has seen both good and bad coaches. To put it simply, he raved about Coach Greg and expressed how much better he would have been under his direction at an earlier age.

Our son flew to Denver with a high level of confidence based on the work he put in with Coach Greg. I must also add that this increase in development and confidence all happened within the span of less than a month and only three workouts. Regardless of the outcome, we are extremely confident in his coaching abilities and sincere care for our son’s success.

There is absolutely no doubt that he is able to relate to players of all ages and skill sets. Outside of any team he ends up with, we would not even consider taking our son anywhere else to continue developing as a hockey player.

Coach Greg comes with our highest recommendation.

Coach Greg was AWESOME! I saw improvements in my game immediately when the season started. He's a fun coach and has a lot of great practice drills and "ice-awareness". Definitely will get more lessons from this coach.

Coach Greg coached my son with a positive, encouraging, and supportive coaching style. The skills and knowledge that he taught propelled my son's hockey game forward. Great job coach. We will be looking to you in the future for additional training.

I wanted to thank Coach Greg for helping my son with skating, after the session, my son's skating and confidence has gone through the roof. My son is looking forward to more sessions with him.

Coach Greg is more than a coach. he is a role model for my young son as he embarks on his hockey journey. he is not only extremely knowledgable, but he is also kind, and patient, and highly skilled as a teacher. on a practical level, he communicates quickly, is always on time, and is a wonderful person to interact with. we got lucky with coach Greg

Coach Greg is awesome! My son came in after his lesson and said, "We need to buy more lessons! He is great.". I cannot wait to see my son use these techniques in a game.
