More About Coach Garrett

I am currently a NASM strength & conditioning specialist for a local hospital- affiliated fitness facility. I am a former high school head track and field coach and assistant cross country coach. I ran collegiate-level track & field and cross country and was an assistant coach at the collegiate level for two years.

I received my Master’s in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. In addition to my degree I have numerous certifications including, NASM certified personal trainer, NSCA certified strength & conditioning specialist, and NASM fitness nutrition specialist.

I try to incorporate a cognitive approach to training. I like to make sure I explain what we are doing, why we are doing it, and how we can get better because of it. I enjoy working with athletes of any age because enthusiasm and determination know no age. I have a good working knowledge of the biomechanical functions and exercise physiology of the body. I understand the science behind what it takes to meet your goals and become an expert at any skill.

When I first meet with a client, I would like to know what they want to accomplish, what experience they have, and what they believe their strengths and weaknesses are. I begin all sessions with an active, dynamic warm-up in order to help reduce injury and prepare for training. Before starting a program, I like to complete a physical assessment to utilize during the program to measure progress.

In my spare time I enjoy weight lifting, running local 5ks and participating in other outdoor recreation activities.

Client Reviews

Muhenad has great four sessions with Coach Garrett. He learned how to pay attention to his hands movement and to use his toes more while running. Muhenad likes when the coach times him. Muhenad looks forward to more great sessions with Coach Garrett.

Coach Garrett has been a great one on one coach for my high school age daughter. All the training has taken place off-season and indoors (back to this later).
My daughter has played soccer a majority of her (young) life. Most of my daughter running experience involved running side by side with defenders, which introduced some bad running habits (i.e. defending her body/ball with arms and elbows). My daughter decided to take her (sophomore) spring high school soccer season off (2015) and decided to give track and field a try with her track season ending at the State Track Meet(she/we were thrilled with her results). She was happy with her results but new her running form (elbows-a-flying) needed some help(“lots of help”). In steps Coach Garrett and within the first few session she looks like a whole new runner (sprinter). He focused on form, different starting stances, warm ups, cool downs etc.. My daughter also said Coach Garrett would video tape her runs/starts and review them during and after the session. I like to say “a photo is worth a thousand words” (in this case video). Based on the last few videos and photos (and comments) that Coach Garrett has provided, my daughter is ready for her upcoming season.
(Back to the first sentence) – I will update this review after her first couple of meets and provided a review based on her in-season results…

Coach Garrett did a wonderful job with my son who was hoping to improve his running during gym class and on the playground. After a few sessions my son's confidence and speed increased. No longer at the back of the pack, now he's in the middle! We couldn't be happier. This was a great addition to physical therapy, thank you!
