To Whom It May Concern: I am a math teacher and soccer coach at the Academy at Palumbo, and I am writing this letter of recommendation for Francis Obeng. I met Francis in the Fall of 2018 when he began as a junior varsity coach with our boys soccer program at the Academy at Palumbo. For most of the season, Francis was the de facto coach of both teams during practices, coached at varsity games when junior varsity did not have a concurrent game, and travelled with the junior varsity team to their games. I love soccer and have played it my whole life, but happily stepped back and allowed Francis to really run our practices shortly after the season began. It was immediately clear that the players listened to and learned much more readily from him than they did from me or any other coach I’ve seen them work with. Francis initially expressed some apprehension about taking the lead at practice and always deferred to me when it came to running drills, choosing positions, and any practice or game decisions. However, he worked some magic with our boys that neither I, nor most other coaches I’ve ever met, am not capable of. He managed to challenge our most advanced players, while simultaneously transforming our least experienced players into moving parts of a team unit. His patience with the boys (and with me) was unending – he was a constant positive presence for our players and built both groups of boys into legitimate competitors. For the first time in six years, our varsity team made it to playoffs, and only lost after a double-overtime and penalty kicks. This same group of boys had an overwhelmingly losing record last year when I first began coaching. From day one, Francis was an invaluable asset to both the varsity and JV teams. He made an immeasurable difference in every individual player and in team varsity/jv as a whole. I witnessed his ability to mold a group of mostly inexperienced players into a strong and dedicated team, but he would be an excellent addition to any soccer program. Please feel free
