More About Coach Derek

I am currently coaching five high school athletes—two girls and three boys—ranging from a junior to sophomores. I have been designing training plans tailored to their individual needs and helping them improve their race times, endurance, and speed.

In addition to working with these athletes, I am about to volunteer with the high school track team and will likely take over the distance team for the next track season. This will provide me with the opportunity to work with more athletes, expand my coaching experience, and further develop my skills.

I’ve run a 15:17 5K and a 1:11 half marathon, with a goal of breaking 15 minutes for the 5K. I competed at both the JUCO and NCAA D2 levels. At Cleveland State Community College, I led the team to a #14 national ranking and won a conference title. I transferred to the University of West Georgia, where I significantly improved my times and became team captain.

In a typical session, I focus on building an aerobic base first, incorporating some strides to improve turnover. After a couple of weeks, we’ll start adding threshold or tempo workouts to enhance endurance, depending on your specific goals. I also prioritize injury prevention, leveraging my personal experience with injuries to guide you through proper recovery techniques and avoid setbacks.
