More About Coach David

I'm in my 3rd year as Sprints/Jumps coach at Missouri Baptist University. I oversee all sprinters and jumpers and multis (though multis like myself are a rare breed). We've already had several national qualifiers and conference champions.

I’m the high jump coach for High Jump STL, here in the St. Louis area.

Before all that I was head coach at Tower Grove Christian Academy where we also produced multiple state champions and qualifiers. My first year there we placed 2nd at state, the highest team place in school history - with half the number of athletes as the 1st place team! We were very proud.

I am a USATF Level 2 coach in Jumps and Throws, and certified USTFCCCA Weight Training for Track & Field. Continuing education is an extremely high value for me.

I competed at Missouri Baptist University (BS in Biology ‘15). My first 2 years I stayed with what I knew as a sprinter/hurdler. I got stagnant, and decided to try the decathlon. I loved it, and never had so much fun competing in my life! I qualified for nationals my senior year. And I still hold the school record in the decathlon.

My only regret is I wish I would've started training for the decathlon sooner! It was a blast. Upon graduation I earned our Divisions Scholar-Athlete award for athletic achievement and outstanding GPA. Every year I was awarded Academic All-American.

But to be honest, the highlights of my athletic career are not found in any accolade. What I hold on to most dearly are the relationships made with fellow athletes and coaches, and the memories, all of which have made me who I am today. That’s what it’s all about. I am forever grateful for them.

From the warm up to cool down, every aspect is designed around the athlete, their event, and how to accomplish the goal of the session. We start by warming up (15-20min). It's a wholistic and dynamic warm up which prepares both body and mind of the athlete. Just like our muscles need warmed up, so does our brain and neural pathways. Next, we'll do specific drills, which again, prepare us for the task ahead. Jumpers and sprinters usually do some skipping drills for rhythm (A-Skip, B-Skip etc), and we gradually increase the intensity up to a few 20m-30m accelerations. Then, the bulk of the session will be event specific, and progressive. For example, a high jump session will include as many quality jumps as we can, progressively getting higher; their goal might be as broad as to improve consistency in their approach, or as specific as hip-alignment at take-off. Finally, we cool down, which is essentially the reverse of the warm up, capped with static stretching as the athlete needs. Questions and conversation always welcomed during sessions.
