More About Coach Antwaun

I am the founder and CEO of JLT Fieldhouse, a nonprofit year round basketball academy in Salisbury, NC. I have coached for 23 years, at the middle school, high school, AAU and collegiate levels. I coached high school (Meadowbrook HS, Chesterfield, VA) players that were state champions, an AAU team(Richmond Metro) that finished 10th in national tournament and was an assistant at Randolph College for two years. Coached under high school and NCAA Division 1 championship coach Mike Sutton.

At the high school level, teaching and coaching the philosophies of our system, allotted me the opportunity to expand strategically as a coach and understand the abilities and limits of my players. Over a four year period at Meadowbrook High School, the teams I coached never placed lower than second in the district/conference, finishing first three times.

I viewed my Richmond Metro AAU coaching experience as my reward for learning the game as a coach and the ability to maximize my players potential. My first two years, I coached the Silver, or "B" team and my third year, I was awarded the "Gold" team. This team had been together for four years and had never reached the national tournament. In my first year as the Gold coach, we finished second in the state tournament and qualified for nationals. We placed 10th in that national tournament.

My college coaching experience was as an assistant at Randolph College in Lynchburg, VA. This coaching opportunity was a great opportunity to learn the game at a higher level, increase my coaching repertoire and gain a better knowledge of the strategic teaching/coaching at this level. Coaching in the ODAC, one of the premier conferences in D3 basketball, was an exciting and great coaching opportunity.

I am currently the varsity boys coach at Salisbury Academy and have been coaching there the past five years. The 2015-16 Jaguars completed a 17-0 season under coach T.

Coach T is also a Certified Gold Licensed Coach with USA Basketball.

I have been a lifelong coach, having played just two years in middle and high school. One of my highlights of coaching was being interviewed by the local paper in Chesterfield, VA regarding the successful year I had coaching, as I coached four teams during one season and summer. The freshmen and JV teams at Meadowbrook high both won their district championships, the middle school team finished second in the conference tournament and the boys 14 and under Richmond Metro AAU team was projected to be a top contender in the national tournament. The joy of the coaching the JV team where all five starters averaged double figures, confirmed that it was by far the best "team" I have ever coached.

All good coaches do not have to have played to be good coaches, just have a passion for the sport they love and a willingness to learn and want to be the best at what they do. That is who I am.

All clients can count on an intense, high energy and enthusiastic work out that encompasses everything from uptempo "factory" like workouts to a breakdown instruction session that leaves them feeling a major sense of accomplishment at the conclusion of each session. I am big on explaining while also listening. It will always be a "partnership" session, as coaches are always learning from the players they train and work with in the gym.

As I am sure many coaches have, my individual sessions have layers to them, to show and build upon. My typical sessions are one hour in length and currently with my clientele the first half of the session focuses on ball handling, dribbling and defense, which includes agility and footwork drills. These are timed and untimed drills. The second half of our sessions focus on shooting. These shooting drills encompass catching and shooting off of screens, shooting off the dribble and finishing at the rim. The last segment prior to cool down and review, is a shooting 'factory", non stop catching and shooting drill that I like to use to challenge shooters to simulate late game situations and the ability to hit the "big' shot(s) when it counts. Game like approach to all aspects of my sessions is what can be expected.

My specialty is teaching the fundamentals. This is an area that has lost focus in the game over the years, in my opinion. Once the fundamentals are taught and learned, a players' potential becomes limitless. a few areas that I focus on in relation to fundamentals is blocking out, setting screens, how to use screen, moving without the ball and defensive footwork.

Great sessions. I am learning something new every session to improve my game. Coach Antwaun is the best. Excellent

We have worked with a few different coaches over the years and coach T is by far our favorite. He not only teaches the kids how to properly execute but also why they need to do things a certain way.

Coach T. Thank you so much for our first lesson. I knew within 5 mins that you were just what my son needed. His first response in the the car ride home confirmed you are the coach for him....”Dad I thought I would go in there and excel but Coach T really showed me I’ve got a lot of work to do.”

My 13 year old had an awesome first workout session with Coach T. There was a good blend of seriousness and joking that kept my son engaged and interested the entire time. He learned alot and is very excited about working more with Coach in the future, getting better and even showing Coach what he can do.

Coach T was great! He explained things in a clear manner and was very enthusiastic. We'll definitely be working with him in the future.

Great atmosphere very detailed
Can wait for great results

Coach T was amazing. My child was nervous and new to the game. After talking with Coach T, he was relaxed and enjoying the lesson. Coach T was personable, knowledgeable, and truly a pleasure to deal with. My son is excited to work more with Coach T and I can't wait to see my son improve.

Great Coach with my daughter! He is amazing. Knowing exactly what he is doing would recommend him to anyone.

Absolutely awesome!

Coach Antwaun is awesome! Has great drills for all age levels and Samuel can't wait to get back on the court again and learn from one of the best coaches I've ever worked with by far. Thanks Coach!

After one session with Coach Antwuan Jacob said "I have found my coach." He takes a very personal approach with each athlete. He assesses the athlete and then works on what he needs. He also listens to Jacob about what he wants to improve on. He notices little things that make a huge difference to the player. Jacob learned new skills and techniques as well as polishing some skills he already had. These sessions have prepared Jacob to be more competitive and confident in games. We will continue to work with Amtwuan to improve Jacob's game.

My 8 year old son loves basketball. He has been working with Antwaun for about 2 years. We have had private lessons, attended summer camps and are now participating in weekly clinics. Antwaun is great with him. And I can tell that he has learned so much. I can’t wait for basketball season to start because I feel like he is so confident and will have a great season. Antwaun truly loves these kids and he truly loves the sport of basketball. He is a great role model for these children to look up to. We are lucky to have him working with our son.
McAllister is is really lucky to have you as his role model and teacher as he pursues his passions. Your leadership in the sport is great, but your enthusiasm and leadership in life sets you apart. thank you! He is looking forward to coming to see you for years to come.
Our son Connor has always loved everything basketball. He has played since the age of 5, through recreational leagues and middle school program. Since starting lessons with Coach T, the improvement in his skills, both physically and mentally, is amazing! Whether in a private session, a clinic, or in basketball camp, Coach T and his staff show players how to make improvements while increasing their confidence at the same time. The summer basketball camp was awesome! At the end of the week, Connor said it was the best camp he’s ever been to. Each day, the players built on what they learned the day before, so it was never boring. Coach T’s knowledge of the game and his ability to draw players in and make them really WANT to learn and improve makes us feel very fortunate to have him as one of Connor’s mentors. Above all, the players have a great time. Thanks for all you do, Coach T!
It has been about a year now since I started having sessions with Coach Thompson. I didn’t know how productive these sessions would be in the beginning but they quickly and frequently challenged me to improve my skill set. Coach Thompson utilizes a variety of drills to make these sessions fun, productive, and challenging (ex: dribbling, shooting mechanics and defensive drills etc.) . Coach Thompson keeps track of your progress and videos certain drills so he can show you your progress as well as the things you need to improve upon. The sessions can be personalized to each person’s individual skill set and goals to ensure that each person gains something from the experience. My primary focus with these sessions has been on improving my shooting and dribbling mechanics through repetition and new drills to keep me on my toes. I believe that I have improved significantly over the course of my sessions; my shooting form and percentage has improved as well as the speed at which I can perform specific combo dribbles. In addition to this I now know more about the mechanics of the game that will help me as I progress with the sport. Coach is consistently nice and patient during these sessions as he is willing to work at your pace and talk you through something if you are confused. I highly recommend these sessions with Coach Thompson, to anyone looking for a fun, challenging and ultimately rewarding experience that will improve your skills and basketball knowledge.
After only a few weeks of basketball lessons with Coach Thompson, we have seen our son’s skills considerably improve. During these lessons, Coach Thompson focused on the fundamentals of shooting and ball handling techniques, as well as many other aspects of the sport. Our son benefited tremendously from this experience and the lessons have had a positive impact on his overall game. Coach Thompson has also instilled a sense of confidence in our son that he will be able to use both on and off the court. We really appreciate Coach Thompson’s professionalism, his passion for the game and his dedication to his students. We would strongly recommend Coach Thompson to any player hoping to take his or her game to the next level.
Our son Trey loves everything about the game of basketball. He’s had great coaches beginning early on with Upward Basketball through city league, elementary and middle school programs. As he continues to grow physically and mentally into a more mature player, his desire to become his personal best has become quite obvious. Antwaun’s passion for the game and commitment to developing young players seemed like the perfect fit for our son. We are very impressed with Antwaun’s knowledge of all the aspects of the sport and with his ability to communicate this effectively during energetic one on one sessions with our 13 year old, ever pushing him to excel.
We are fortunate to have the JLT Fieldhouse organization to offer coaching, leadership, and mentoring to children in this community. Coach Thompson and his staff devote as much energy and time to developing character and integrity in young people as they do to developing the skills needed for athletic growth. He gets to know each participant as an individual and provides a caring environment for students to grow in their confidence and abilities.
