More About Coach Amber

Hi! I'm coach Amber and I'm a former indoor and sand player for Tulane University ('14), former co-director/coach with Optimum Volleyball and current member of the US Virgin Islands National Beach Volleyball team. This will be my 6th season as a club or school coach and I have experience with ages 12-18.

I love coaching as much as playing and I'm looking for beach players of all ages and experience levels to work with!

At Tulane, I was a DS and member of the Sand volleyball team, playing at the 4th, 5th, and brief stint at 2nd over my career. I currently play on the US Virgin Islands National Beach Volleyball team and I'm in my 4th year competing on the NORCECA Tour. In 2014, my partner and I qualified for the CAC Games where I tallied the most digs, and in 2016 we qualified for the third round of the Continental Cup (Olympic Qualifiers). This past year we competed once again in the CAC Games in Barranquilla, Colombia and are looking forward to the upcoming games and trials!

I believe a quote that my father lives by as a coach: it's either something that you're coaching or something that you're letting happen.
I don't believe in yelling or harsh criticism (even when the player makes the same mistake) for several reasons. First, the player most likely didn't mess up because she couldn't hear me, she messed up because she was unable to complete the action (yet), was "in her head"/unfocused or choosing to be contrary. None of these scenarios can be fixed by me raising my voice.
Secondly, harsh criticism tends to make people focus on the mistake made and not the correction; this then leads to more mistakes or too great of a focus on the end result and not the process.

Accordingly, I run practices by explaining a drill and watching what the athlete does naturally without my instruction. We then talk about their movements and results, and then we begin the drill for real with me critiquing. I do this because I want to see how the athlete naturally processes the drill and how they believe it applies to a game-like situation. There's only so much coaching I can give once my players are playing, so they need to not only be able to execute a drill, but also know WHY they are doing it and which situations to use the skill in a game.

Most of my sessions are based on passing, serving or SR transition because that is how EVERY SINGLE PLAY starts. But I believe in having a set up that is 10% warm up drill, 10% secondary focus drill, 30% main focus drill, 10% third focus drill, 10% learning drill for next practice (players should stretch before and after to save our time and your money)

Coach Amber truly was great! We traveled 1.5 hrs for the session due to her qualifications and we have zero regrets. She was early (not just on time) and addressed our concern with my daughters serving. I plan on setting up future sessions with Coach Amber, so reserve her now while you can!
