More About Coach Kevin
I have experience coaching mid-distance and distance runners (800m - marathon) of all ages and experience levels.
As head cross country coach and assistant track coach of a local high school, I work with young runners brand new to the sport. On the other end of the spectrum, I recently guided my 66-year-old father to complete his first marathon.
I also know the sport well enough to help top athletes reach new heights. After college, I coached myself through the 2010 season and set personal bests of 1:51 800, 3:44 1500, and 4:02 mile… before the era of super shoes!
Though I'm much older and slower (I'm 36 now), I still train and race as much as I can. I ran 1:59 800 at the 2024 Millrose Games (Club DMR) and ran 4:28 mile at the 2023 Brooklyn Mile. I've developed an understanding of how to train and race as your body begins to age. Maintaining a high V02 max is integral to longevity of healthspan and lifespan and I can help you do that.
In high school, I was a two-time Footlocker National Cross Country Championships qualifier (top 32 in the country qualify). I won several NYS titles, earned All-American honors twice, and set personal bests of 3:50 1500 (roughly a 4:07/4:08 mile) and 9:01 2mile.
I received a scholarship to the University of Virginia where I was on three ACC Championship teams. In 2009, I set a 2 second PR in the ACC championship 1500 meter final, finishing fourth and helping to capture an unexpected team title. In cross country, I had a personal best of 24:27 for 8k and 30:58 for 10k.
We're likely to meet for a track session, tempo run, or another workout effort. Here's what those sessions will look like:
- I warm up with you to talk through the workout (you'll already know the basics). We'll go through session goals, contingencies, and other factors.
- We will do some stretching, drills, and strides. I suggest active isolated stretching with a rope.
- Then the fun starts... the reason you're there... the day's workout! I like to do at least one interval with my athletes - typically in the back end of the workout - to get a sense of how they're feeling.
- After the workout, you'll cool down and stretch... and depending on your goals, we might do some strength work.
- We will follow up over the next few days via phone/text/email to see how you're recovering from the workout session and to better plan the next session.
Of course we can also come up with virtual coaching sessions, but I have always found that I do my best workouts when there's someone there - someone who understands the sport - to encourage and push me.
